Scholarship Information - January 2009

The Tzu Chi Foundation is pleased to announce that its scholarship program, Tzu Chi Scholars 2009, is now accepting applications.  Tzu Chi scholars are selected on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement.  This is a nationwide program, with each scholar awarded a total of $1,000.   Requirements include a demonstrated financial need for college tuition,  a minimum GPA of 3.0, and future enrollment in a U.S. college for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Applications and requirements are available in Guidance or at http://www.us.tzuchi.org .  Applications are due to the foundation by March 31, 2009.   Any questions may be directed to program coordinator Thomas Chu at 973-857-8666.

The New Jersey Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, an official chartered chapter of the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association, is pleased to announce the availability of college scholarship awards to sons and daughters of active-duty police and fire personnel.  Scholarship awards in the amount of $1,500 for first prize and $1,000 for second prize are available to qualified high school seniors.  National scholarships are also available.  A parent must be a full-time paid member of a police department or fire department (may be a volunteer for a fire department) to qualify; only current high school seniors may apply.  Applications are available in Guidance; applications are due to the NJBFAA by March 20, 2009.  Questions may be directed to Christine Higgins at 609-695-4444. 

The American Legion Auxiliary announces its National President's Scholarship.  Candidates for this award will be direct descendants, step-children or step-grandchildren of U.S. wartime veterans who served in one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion (a list is available in Guidance).  Only current high school seniors may apply.   Applicants must have completed 50 hours of volunteer service within the community, verified in writing by the recipient organizations.  Applications are due to the local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President on or before March 1, 2009.  Applications are available in Guidance. 

The New Jersey Schoolwomen's Club announces its Schoolwomen's Scholarship.  This year two scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, and two educational awards, in the amount of $500 each, will be awarded to female graduates who intend to pursue certification and a career in the field of education.  Applicants must have a minimum combined SAT score of 1460 and/or an ACT score of 24, and an academic average of C+.   Applications are available in Guidance; completed applications are due to the Club by February 20, 2009.
