Newspapers and Magazines 
Critique four current articles from a magazine or newspaper on biology's implications in our lives.  Select ONE each from the following topics: medicine, evolution, genetics and one free choice topic.  A copy of each article plus the critiques are due on the first day of class.

Emerging Diseases & Forensic Science Demon in the Freezer OR The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
The concepts of both Demon in the Freezer and The Hot Zone will be discussed through the Emerging Diseases half of the class.
 

Dead Men Do Tell Tales by William Maples
Read the book Dead Men Do Tell Tales and pay particular attention to the following chapters.  You should take notes on the cases highlighted in these chapters, victimology (who was killed), how the person probably died and how Maples was able to determine the cause of death.  You will be able to use these notes when you take the written test for this book.  Chapters include:

  • Chapter 2 - Talkative Skulls
  • Chapter 4 - The Enfolding Earth
  • Chapter 5 - Flotsam and Jetsam
  • Chapter 6 - When the Sickness is Your Soul
  • Chapter 7 - Outpacing the Fiend
  • Chapter 9 - A Sunless Place
  • Chapter 13 - The Misplaced Conquistador
  • Chapter 15 - The Tsar of all the Russias
A.P. Biology School textbook - borrow from teacher
Read and outline (typed) first five chapters. Be prepared to turn your outlines in on the first day of school and to take a test on these chapters within the first 5-6 days of school.
Anatomy & Physiology Newspapers and magazines
Find five articles on diseases from a combination of both newspaper and magazine articles.  Research them as to what systems (i.e. circulatory, digestive, endocrine, nervous, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, lymphatic) are affected and possible ways of treating them. Copies of each article and commentary to be handed in.
A.P. Chemistry School textbook - borrow from teacher
Read the Giancoli text and complete assignments, as a review from Honors Chemistry I before the first day of class in September.
Engineering Physics Honors A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
A written critique and questions regarding the first five chapters of this book will be expected the first week of class.  Come prepared with notes from your reading regarding Stephen Hawking's view on the central role of physicists in the search for answers to the mysteries of the age and size of the universe.
