A.H.S. Philosophy of Education

Communication
To develop in individual students the ability to understand and communicate clearly by:
  • providing courses which focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  • providing enrichment activities which highlight self-expression in the arts and sciences.
  • providing opportunities for students to interact with other members of the school community.

Citizenship
To promote an understanding of people and their cultures throughout global regions and an understanding of the responsibilities which one citizen shares with another in a democratic society and the world by:

  • providing opportunities for participation in student government.
  • promoting an understanding of local government.
  • providing enrichment activities which promote the understanding of other cultures.
  • providing opportunities for students to learn self-discipline.
  • providing courses in the social sciences.

Fitness
To aid students in developing habits and ideals which will improve and preserve their physical and emotional well being by:

  • providing courses and extracurricular activities which improve physical fitness.
  • providing support services which assess students' strengths, needs, abilities, and interests.

Knowledge
To develop skills and acquire knowledge by offering a diverse flexible program of studies to meet the needs of our students by:

  • providing courses for those students who wish to prepare themselves for higher education.
  • providing courses for those students who wish to develop skills for immediate employment.
  • providing enrichment courses.
  • providing courses and activities to meet special interests and needs.

Critical Thinking
To develop the ability in students to identify pertinent knowledge and techniques from their previous experiences and bring this to bear on new problems and situations by:

  • developing knowledge of specifics, ways and means of dealing with specifics, and of the universals and abstractions in all courses of study.
  • cultivating the ability to understand and apply previous knowledge in analyzing a new situation.
  • providing opportunities for the synthesis and evaluation of information and the opportunity to form judgments.
