Welcome Back

August 2019

Dear UFRSD Community,

I am ENERGIZED and MOTIVATED knowing that our staff and students will be back soon in the UFRSD for the 2019-2020 school year! Since the last day of school, we have been planning new initiatives, hiring staff, and looking forward to having everyone back in September. Needless to say, I am so excited about the upcoming school year.

Recently, the UFRSD was rated one of the best school districts in the State and County (#2 in Monmouth County and #55 in NJ by Niche - https://www.niche.com/k12/d/upper-freehold-regional-school-district-nj/).  This is a testament to the students, staff and families within our community. The UFRSD is a great place to be, and I am constantly reminded how fortunate I am to be a part of this outstanding district. This coming school year we are hoping to ELEVATE our program and opportunities for our students. They deserve the best, and we are doing everything we can to provide them with it.

This year, we are offering new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) opportunities at Newell, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at AHS, a continuation of our Community Conversations for our families that focus on Mental Health and Wellness; an exploration of school starting times that will examine the benefit of changing start times to align more with what brain research tells us, and an evaluation of our high school schedule to ensure that we are providing the best and most efficient schedule for our students. There is even more coming, so stay tuned for improvements to our schools and programs.

Three updates:

  • New Scoreboard

    • The main stadium will have a new scoreboard for our home games. Thanks to the Andrew Jarzyk Memorial Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/andrewjarzykmemorialfoundation/), our new scoreboard will be a great addition to our stadium for many years to come! Special thanks to Steve and Karyn Jarzyk for helping to make this a reality.

  • Referendum Update

    • Our roofing project and auditorium updates have made significant progress. We expect both to be at or near completion before students return to school. If you are interested in a more detailed update, join the UFRSD Board of Education TONIGHT, August 21st at 7:30 p.m. for a Facebook LIVE conversation at www.facebook.com/ufrsd.

  • School Security Update

    • The UFRSD is always looking for ways to improve our security. This year, we will be implementing Lobby Guard at each school. Lobby Guard is a visitor management system that will help monitor who is in the building for meetings or school events during the school day.

    • We are currently evaluating a few systems that will provide silent alarms at each school. This is required through the NJ Alyssa’s Law.

Again, I am so excited to see our students back on their first day -  September 4th (AHS) and September 5th (NES and SBMS). This year is destined to be our best yet. We hope that the remainder of summer gives you rest and relaxation in preparation for the new school year. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

My best,

Mark Guterl

Superintendent of Schools
